Age spots: There are several treatment options to minimize them
By Dra. Mónica Alfaro

The spots on your skin represent changes in pigmentation caused by increased melanin production, the substance that gives the skin its color. This darker color could result from photoaging, sun exposure to ultraviolet light, or hormonal changes, especially during pregnancy.
Age spots commonly appear after age 30, especially on areas of the body that have been overexposed to sunlight, such as the hands, face, arms, forehead, and shoulders. This condition can be avoided by using sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Of course, it is very important to stay out of direct sunlight.
There are several treatment options to minimize age spots. The best and least invasive option is IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), which uses a specific light spectrum to break down excess pigment and promote cell regeneration. The only side effect is slight, temporary redness.
Home care is very important for improving treatment outcomes. It is recommended to use lotions, serums, and sunscreens with ingredients that greatly benefit the skin, such as vitamin C, kojic acid, and Alpha Hydroxy acids, among others. The key is the disciplined, regular use of high-SPF sunscreen.
Remember, the skin is the largest organ in our body, and it deserves professional treatment to avoid future lesions.
