Single Mom: Our Journey in Costa Rica
AUTHOR: Sarah Elena
Let me share a little about our journey in Costa Rica…
I almost gave up and went home to the United States after finding out I was pregnant while living here in Costa Rica. There were so many thoughts swirling in my mind. How would I provide a good life for my daughter here? Will she be able to get a good education? How will I manage this without the support of my family?
Costa Rica was still new to me in a way. I found out I was pregnant a year after moving here. I wondered how I would ever navigate a new country as a new mom with a new tiny human to take care of.
I was scared. I felt alone. All of the changes I was going through felt overwhelming. And I quickly began searching for home rentals back in the town I used to live in, Virginia.
Then something inside me changed…
I pushed those limiting beliefs to the side. If anyone COULD be a single mom in another country and thrive, it WOULD be me. I decided to channel the same force and energy to overcome my fears and remember to believe in the life I wanted to create for myself in Costa Rica. Believe in the life I would now make for myself and my daughter.
After my daughter was born, I was blessed to be in a great community. I remember the woman who owned the tiny cabina where I lived in Dominicalito. It was the size of a large closet with a killer ocean view. She would always ask me if I had eaten anything and offer to push my baby in a hammock for a nap.

At the same time, I went to straighten up my home and get some work done. I remember the days of having my daughter on one arm and my computer on the other working when she was one month old.
My daughter gave me the motivation and strength to believe in the path we are carving, and she still does!
Now, we have had great success living here, and I am SO glad I stuck it out during my moments of almost giving up. This experience has taught me never to give up and fight for what I believe in.
There were some key lessons I learned through these difficult times of almost giving up, I can't wait to share this with you because it has changed my life and helped me feel settled here in Costa Rica over the years.
