Protecting Nature
Starts at Home with AmbiciOsas
AUTHOR: Angela Delgado, Director AmbiciOsas
AmbiciOsas is the Spanish name for ambitious people in the Canton of Osa. We are so AmbiciOsas that we want to protect nature by taking care of every single plastic material discarded in our region that we created the Re-Anclaje project (Re-Anclaje means Re-Anchor,) with the idea to prevent plastics from reaching the ocean, anchoring it on the land.
Situation Now
We organize beach clean-ups in partnership with Innoceanna, Whale Tail Brewery, and other local businesses. We offer free classes about sustainable business for local people to raise awareness about our waste, consumption, and environmental impact. Right now, we are only living the beginning of what could be a bigger problem in the area, affecting nature around us with only a small capacity of public institutions to offer solutions.

Our Solution
Create a system available to the population of Bahia Ballena. Hopefully, it will expand to the whole of Costa Ballena's people and businesses. A group of local Costa Ricans and ex-pats leads the Association AmbiciOsas and tries to find a sustainable solution to the recycling challenge. Re-Anclaje has two main activities to reach this goal:
Recycle Thursdays
Every first and third Thursday of every month at “El Mercado de Bahia Ballena” from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Pick-Up Membership
The one-time membership registration fee is $14.99, including three bins for your house: Aluminium, Glass, and Plastic.
For $24.99 a month - Pick-Up twice a month.
For $45.99 a month - Pick-Up every week.

Your money, your support:
- Will make the re-modeling of the Puerto Nuevo Recycle Collection Center possible to increase the capacity of the accepted materials.
- Shortly, we will be processing all regional plastic, glass, and aluminum with high-tech technology in our Innovation Recycle Center.
AmbiciOsas is looking forward to finding a long-term solution for our consumption waste and supporting the local economy of Costa Ballena, preventing wasting valuable materials, and supporting innovation and creative thoughts about how to reuse them.
