Mercado Bahia Ballena:
Discover Costa Rica´s Diversity
Author: Evi Heine
Every Wednesday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., a vibrant market takes place at El Mercado de Bahía Ballena in Uvita, offering many wonderful things to discover. Especially for tourists like me, it’s a great opportunity to explore local food, art and craftsmanship.
Among the largest avocados and bananas I have ever seen, smaller stalls line up, offering everything from nuts, spices and honey to handmade clothing, artwork and woodcraft. For a refreshing break, a cold freshly pressed pineapple juice is just the thing, often accompanied by friendly conversations with the vendors.
One of these conversations was with Peggy, who sells baked goods at her stand, Gregorio’s Delights. She has been living in Costa Rica for almost eight years. After retiring, she and her husband moved from Florida to the area between Coronado and Cortés. Together with an assistant, they bake their products from home.

The idea for their business came about by chance. While their grandson was living with them and playing soccer, they began baking treats to support him and those around him. Over time, this grew into more than a practical solution and became their passion project.
Peggy and her husband usually run the stand on their own. What she values most is the atmosphere at the market. The vendors see themselves as a family, supporting each other and helping out when needed. Competition takes a back seat, while community spirit shapes daily life. She also appreciates the visitors, who treat her with kindness and come from all over the world.
Before we say goodbye, I get to try her banana bread, a wonderful parting gift. I promise to come back soon, as I still need to try her brownies. There is so much to discover here, but one thing is certain: visit this market and see for yourself, you will not be disappointed.
