Was That a Thunder quake?

Was That a Thunder quake?

Author: Beth Sylver.

We experienced an immense amount of rain before the beginning of the real rainy season, usually August-November. A few of the storms back in late July were especially intense.

I remember during one storm, the thunder and lightning were very nearby. The lightning was so bright, and the thunder rumbled with such force it shook our house. I thought we might be experiencing a small earthquake, but we weren’t. What I felt is known as a thunder quake. A thunder quake is when a thunderstorm is so severe that the rumbling seems like an earthquake. Wow, I just love nature!

Now, with the rainier season upon us, here are some helpful tips and recommendations!

It’s an excellent time to check out your vehicle. Make sure your windshield wipers are working well. Check the tread and air pressure on your tires and your spare tire. Check your emergency flashers, and all lights. Please make sure you have everything you need for your Emergency Vehicle Kit: 2 reflective triangles, one reflective vest, a spare tire, and tools to replace it, battery cables, and a fire extinguisher.

Leave extra time for driving and slow down. Try to be more patient and be ready for anything. If you see water flowing across the road, think twice before crossing it. If you come to a river crossing and the river is light brown, stay far away from the edge. Please do not cross if the river is flowing quickly. There is likely to be a lot of water coming down at once from the mountain. It is best to sit tight and wait it out. Also, the rivers and small creeks can be higher, depending on the tides and the moon.

Get yourself set up with things you like to do  at home. Borrow a few extra books from the Uvita Community Library, get engaged in a new hobby, take an online class (there is so much offered for free), or start a vegetable garden! Make great use of the extra indoor time by spending quality time with your family, friends, and pets!

Help your furry friends who get frightened during the scary thunder and lightning storms. There are remedies you can purchase at our local vet such as Bach Rescue Night, a natural remedy, which I hear works great!

It is a good time to check the supplies in your house. Make sure you are stocked up on candles, matches or lighters, batteries, jugs of water, extra medical prescriptions, and necessities.

The most important thing to do right now is to embrace and welcome the rainiest time of the year! Remember, this is why we live in such a lush, vibrant, and green environment. Plus, when rain and sun meet in the sky, we get rainbows!
