Jungle sidewalks, a natural approach to landscaping
I appreciate the natural approach to infrastructure and landscaping, but when you are trying to sell or rent your home, the first impression is very important. So, what improvements can be made that are appealing and relatively affordable?
Landscaping— If you own a home here, you probably have some degree of greenery. However, a smattering of neglected dracaenas and heliconias amid tall grass barely qualifies as landscaping. Eye catching homes have a well-executed landscaping plan. The color and fragrance of plants and flowers have a positive emotional effect on our daily lives and buyers and renters. Good gardeners are not difficult to find, and the greener their thumb, the better. If you’re still not convinced, remember the flora brings the fauna, including- birds, butterflies, and other fascinating creatures.
Gates and Lighting— I don’t mean to overstress the importance of first impressions, no wait, actually, I do! Your driveway entrance is the first impression. If the gravel on your driveway has washed away, definitely replace it. Exposed clay is both unsightly and at times, dangerous in the rain.
I took a house listing last year with a variety of entrance issues. The metal gate was sagging and had chipped paint. The lights didn’t work on the white columns which were discolored at the bottom from the effects of rain splattering off the clay dirt. So the owner had the gate and lighting repaired, repainted the columns, and added a two-inch layer of river rock for a border, an attractive and effective touch. Also, he had the moldy concrete driveway pressure washed. What a difference!
The Front Door— The threshold into your home is significant and yet so often overlooked. I don’t want to get too “feng shui” here, but a clean, uncluttered, and well-lit entry is key.
In some instances adding flowers, preferably in stylish pots, can make your entry pop. If painting your front door red isn’t an option, make sure it is clean and opens freely without scraping on the tile or any other issues.
These improvements are easy to make, affordable, and sure to enhance the appeal of your home.
