Costa Rican Banknotes are so beautiful - the 10.000 Colones Bill

The Costa Rican money journey continues with the green 10,000 banknotes! The rainforest theme shown is just one of the twelve Climatic Zones.

 José Maria Hipólito Figueres Ferrer (September 25, 1906 -- June 8th, 1990) was the President of Costa Rica three times! He is responsible for abolishing the army in his first term and also nationalized the banking industry. He made it possible for not only women to vote but also Afro-Costa Ricans.

His first wife was Henrietta Boggs, with whom he had two children. Later, he married Karen Olsen Beck from New York, with whom he had four children. Karen served as a member of Costa Rica's Legislative Assembly.

His son, José Maria Figueres, was also president from 1994 to 1998. Muni Figueres Boggs, his daughter, serves as the Ambassador for Costa Rica to the United States. His other daughter, Christiana Figueres, is a Costa Rican diplomat who served from 2010 to 2016 as the Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC.

The brown-throated sloth  (Bradypus variegatus) is a species of three-toed sloths found in the Neotropical areas of Central and South America. It is the most common of the four species of 3 toed sloths. Habitat is the forest of Central and South America. There are two families of sloths in the World: two-towed and three-toed. Of the 6 species, there are 2 in Costa Rica.

Fun fact: Every sloth has three toes! The two-toed sloth's difference is that it has two fingers on its forelimbs.

The fungus represented on the 10,000 colones is from the family Pezizaceae in the Ascomycota. These grow in the form of a cup which is used to collect rainwater in the spores.

There are 25,000 to 30,000 kinds of orchids in the World. You can find 1,300 in Costa Rica! Represented on this banknote is the Eriopsis, a genus of flowering plants from the family Orchidaceae. Its species are native to South and Central America.
