Be certain your day at the beach is a happy experience.
Leave valuables at home, safe in your hotel or rental unit. Only take your ID, driver’s license, and the amount of cash you’ll need for the day.
If you bring your phone, make sure it is not on airplane mode. Write down the IMEI number (International Mobile Equipment Identity) and keep it somewhere safe. The IMEI number can be found behind the battery or by dialing: *#06#. Why keep the IMEI? Because it is the best way to track the phone.
If your phone is stolen don´t have it blocked immediately because the authorities can´t track it. If your phone has email, change the password to your email account so a thief can´t access it. For computers and tablets (iPad, etc) keep the serial numbers in a safe place. Don’t leave your belongings unattended or in plain sight on the beach or leave any valuables in your car. Roll up your windows and lock the doors!
Consider purchasing a waterproof pouch that you can take swimming with you for your personal documents, cash, and phone. There are several great products that are reasonably priced on Amazon. Some models can be purchased from the Ojochal Tourist & Business Center. If you are going to the beach solo, try to stay within “shouting distance” of other people in case you need help.
For your safety, avoid camping or sleeping at the beach. Use common sense and trust your instincts – if something doesn’t look or feel right, it probably isn’t.
If you see anything suspicious, or see someone stealing belongings, contact the nearest lifeguard, park attendant, or police officer. Always make a report to the police when a crime has occurred.
