Biostimulators and exosomes: new strategies for skin rejuvenation

Author: Dr. Monica Alfaro

Skin aging is a natural process influenced by genetics, hormonal changes, and environmental factors such as ultraviolet radiation, pollution, and lifestyle choices. Recent advancements in aesthetic medicine have shifted toward treatments that not only address visible signs but also promote skin regeneration. Among these innovative approaches are collagen bio stimulators and exosomes, which support skin repair and revitalization from a biological standpoint.

Bio stimulators are injectable agents that stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, essential proteins responsible for skin firmness, elasticity, and structural integrity. They activate fibroblasts, the cells that synthesize collagen, leading to gradual improvements in skin quality.

These include increased firmness, enhanced elasticity, reduced sagging, and thicker dermis. Common bio stimulators include poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA), and polycaprolactone (PCL). These substances are biocompatible and resorbable, with effects becoming visible over several months and lasting up to two years.

The optimal results are achieved through a series of treatments tailored to the initial condition of the skin. Suitable areas for treatment encompass the face, neck, décolleté, arms, abdomen, and buttocks. Overall, these therapies offer a minimally invasive option for skin rejuvenation, combining biological stimulation with long-lasting effects.

Exosomes are diminute extracellular vesicles secreted by various cell types, particularly stem cells, containing proteins, lipids, growth factors, and genetic material that facilitate intercellular communication. In aesthetic dermatology, they are utilized to promote regenerative processes, tissue repair, and skin quality enhancement. These vesicles activate fibroblasts, resulting in increased synthesis of collagen and elastin, cellular regeneration, and modulation of inflammatory responses. Such mechanisms lead to improvements in skin texture, luminosity, and a more youthful appearance. Exosomes can be incorporated with multiple treatment modalities, including microneedling, fractional laser, radiofrequency, and fractional plasma, or applied topically in conjunction with other procedures. A thorough skin assessment is critical prior to treatment to determine the most appropriate approach. Proper evaluation ensures targeted therapy, thereby optimizing clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction in aesthetic skin rejuvenation.
