The Dominical Semana Santa Classic has become a big and completely nonprofit community event. Justin Hague the organizer and head judge came to Dominical in 2005. Originally, he was a realtor from California who found that this area had a great potential. Always a passionate surfer, this was his opportunity to making a living out of his favorite sport. He founded Tubo Surf, promoting the surfing culture in Dominical. What a shock for him to learn that so many people drowned at the beach! At this time, lifeguards existed in Dominical only on an irregular basis. In order to raise funds for these very important life savers, he started organizing Surf Competitions, this year the 7th Dominical Semana Santa Classic.
Surfers in the categories Open Male, Open Female, Junior Male, Local and Mini Groms (U12) participated putting on amazing show. Most sponsors have been the same from the very start such as Banana Print, Maracatú, Kike and Costa Rican Architects, David Wolfe with DGK Contracting from Ojochal, the Costa Rica Surf Camp and so many more. Relatively new sponsors are Fuego Brew Co. and Mavi Surf Hotel. Thanks to all!
“The sponsors money pays for prizes and the competition” explained Justin “with the inscription money and the entrance fee going to the after party at El Fuego. These funds were entirely donated ($1,100) to our committed Costa Ballena Lifeguards.”What an excellent job by the town of Dominical and organizer Justin Hague, the proud father of a beautiful two year old daughter, Brisha. “We have been lucky! During Easter the waves are always good, with great surfing conditions for the participants and the swell allowing for an excellent spectacle for the attending public.”
