Pura Vida in Sierpe
~ By Jeanne Brenan
Boating the Sierpe River is not only a beautiful experience. With several ways to enjoy it, they all originate from the town of Sierpe.
Exploring up or downriver, the Estero Azul by way of tours, river taxi, or a friend with a boat can enhance one’s Costa Rica adventure. Even though it is not a long ride from one side to the other, hopping on one of the two launches is quite an event. Yes, there is a new river launch with seating in town! The original ‘older’ launch has recently installed seating and a protective cover sheltering one from the sun or rain.
Both launches transport trucks, cars, motorcycles, animals, and people.
Again, it is not a long ride, but do not miss it. You, the explorer, can continue on the dirt road for further exploration, or come right back across the Sierpe and dine at one of the many restaurants in town, shop in Laura’s excellent clothes boutique, or have your hair done at Cindy’s new and professional salon.
It is difficult to not focus on the river, which is spectacular all day and offers an aspect of Costa Rica that is not found in larger cities or expat communities.
“Pura Vida” is truly an accurate expression traveling the Sierpe. Iguanas, tiger herons, crocodiles, monkeys, and sometimes snakes are a few of the common sights. Farmers bringing their livestock from one side of the river to the other, to market or to another farm, is also humbling and the feelings of respect and honor come to mind.
Yes, Sierpe is rural, quiet, and gentle. The river surrounds the town on three sides.
Taking time walking the streets, going into the markets, enjoying the shade in the Plaza are opportunities to see and understand a bit more about this gorgeous and tranquil country, Costa Rica. Sierpe is a unique experience not to miss.
