New Lifeguard Tower at Playa Hermosa

Lifeguard tower

By Dagmar Reinhard

It was per initiative of Don Brian Nice, the source of many community-projects in Costa Ballena, that the new lifeguard tower in Playa Hermosa was built and recently inaugurated. Currently, it is the only site along our coast providing service with certified lifeguards.

Álvaro Cedeño and Andres Vargas Obando are cousins; as lifeguards, already rescued some youngsters that ignored the warnings, and unfortunately were swept into the sea by a wave.

The Osa Canton´s Mayor, Don Alberto Cole, inspected the site and granted his approval. The next part of the project is to set up services and a tower for the tourist police.

When we asked Don Brian if he knew who had funded the tower and the basic equipment, he gracefully replied: “Initially the funds came out of my pocket;” however, the idea is to raise funds by selling T-shirts and hats with the logo of the Lifeguards of Costa Ballena – Costa Rica. That will help paying the salary of the lifeguards and the equipment’s regular maintenance.

Álvaro advices: “Try not going far away from the tower, Playa Hermosa is about 13 km long, and since we don’t have quads yet, the distance might delay the rescue.”
