Hangover (Goma), Local Remedies
By Trevor Brown
Costa Ballena has some of the best parties in Costa Rica during the summer months. With multiple music festivals, the Craft Beer Fest, Envision and the Semana Santa Surf Classic, there is no shortage of fun. While I highly recommend attending all of these festivities, I also highly recommend taking care of yourself.
Here are some easy tricks you can do to ease the pain and bring your body’s chemistry back to a normal state.
Start your morning with some eggs. Eggs contain the amino acid cysteine that breaks down the acetaldehyde, the toxin causing the hangover. The eggs will help absorb the toxins.
Eating bananas will also help. When you drink a lot, you deplete your body of electrolytes. Bananas have high amounts of potassium, a type of electrolyte.
This is what I do: I blend bananas, honey, and milk; the honey will help your body reach normal blood sugar levels while your liver processes the alcohol. The milk will soothe your stomach and helps with rehydration while the bananas replenish electrolytes.
Coconut water is another good source of potassium and a local favorite.
Locals also swear by the ceviche juice. If you are really hurting, have a beer with your ceviche.
Personally, I like to eat a big breakfast and go soak in some cold water at one of the many local waterfalls.
In Costa Ballena, we are lucky to have most of the remedies nearby and for cheap. Next time you wake up with a headache from the night before, hone in on your personal recipe to power you through a multiple day festival.
See you out there!
