From Aguas Buenas, Pérez Zeledón to Uvita – walking …
By Nolan Campos
My name is Nolan Campos; I am a doctor, and currently living in San José as well as my fiancée Laura Cordero. We are both from San Juan Bosco, Pérez Zeledón.
I moved from New Jersey, U.S. five years ago to study medicine in Costa Rica and since then, whenever I have vacation time, we embark on a little adventure, walking all the way to Uvita.
We have done this trip four times; it is a journey of 14 km, and we have accomplished it in three and a half hours. Every time we start this kind of walk; we monitor it with an app called Runtastic. This application allows us to see the distance we have covered, calories burned, elevation, and take pictures for our friends to follow the entire route in real-time.
There is a good cell phone reception on over 80 % of the route; the topography is exceptional and unobstructed, almost straight without detours. The road is a little isolated, and there are no homes for the first seven km.
The trail becomes tough at the beginning of Calle Bejuco, mostly because there are many loose stones and the road is very steep. The trip is worth it, and the scenery is spectacular. From up there, the Pacific and the whale´s tail can be seen, and we can always find cold water from the springs.
On our way, we always walk by the famous waterfall of Uvita, which we have not visited yet; we only saw it in the movie (AE – Altos Exodus), shot in that spot a year ago. Once we arrive in Bahía, we go straight to Playa Chaman where we swim and relax.
The people from Bahía can´t believe that we walked from the “top of the mountain,” and when we show them the pictures, they actually look surprised.
It’s amazing to think that a few hours earlier, we were in a different province, the one we walked from side to side. That route is geographically interesting, and the landscape is so spectacular, there is no way to describe it, it needs to be experienced personally.
