Dr. Ana a little dynamo of a doctor in a veterinary center

Dr. Ana Torres went to graduate school at the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica, getting a Master’s in Conservation Medicine. This dynamo of a doctor never stops learning and spends some of her non-working hours studying online veterinary and aviculture classes.

Do you have a cat or a dog? Have you taken your pet to the veterinary office in Uvita? If you answered, “Yes” and “Yes,” chances are you have seen, Dr. Ana. You may have met her because she took excellent care of your pet but

I suspect you don’t really know her. Dra. Ana Maria Torres Mejia, born in Colombia, is a graduate of several universities in Colombia, holding degrees in Biology and Environmental Education and as Zootechnical Veterinarian.

This dynamo of a doctor never stops learning and spends some of her non-working hours studying online veterinary and aviculture classes. Dr. Fernando Riera Silesky invited Ana to join his practice about five years ago and calls her punctual, efficient, responsible, and is grateful that she enables him to take time off. In addition to her job at Costa Ballena Veterinary Center, Dr. Ana performs surgeries at Castration Clinics for local shelters, DAWG, and El Refugio.

Dr. Ana

Dr. Ana also happens to be the Director of ASOMACAO, an NGO founded in 2014, which aims to ensure the continued existence of the Scarlet Macaw in Costa Rica. Because of her work in rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing - whenever possible - the Scarlet Macaws in her care, Dr. Ana has been invited to speak in Belgium, Colombia, and Costa Rica itself on ASOMACAO’s project, and regularly attends professional conferences here and abroad.

ASOMACAO works with many conservation groups to clean up beaches and mangrove wetlands, to restore and preserve biological corridors, and with Reserva Playa Tortuga and Hacienda Baru, on other conservation projects. A professional in the office, Ana is very funny outside of work, with a ready laugh and a great sense of humor. She’s an empathetic listener, likes to read, practices yoga, and is a birdwatcher with the group Brigada Cobas.

This is only the tip of the iceberg that is her life but now you may say you know a bit more about this special person who is my friend, Dra. Ana Maria Torres Mejia.
