Coast Guard Training

Guarantee safety on the beaches of Costa Ballena
In September, fifteen dedicated young people joined the Coast Guard in Manuel Antonio for a 2-week, intensive training program to obtain an Open Water Rescue Certificate. This program, provided by the Coast Guard, is in preparation to become certified lifeguards throughout Costa Rica.
Until Costa Rica implements a national lifeguard program, which is still a long way off, this certification with the Coast Guard is the best training they can receive and accredits them nationally. The participants of the course came from various regions of the country, from as far away as Heredia, Cortes, Orotina, Golfito and Punta Mala. Locally, they came from Dominical, Dominicalito and Bahia Ballena. For the first time, 3 women took the course.
One of the female trainees and future lifeguards, Tara commented: "I am so impressed with the team we have in Costa Ballena, a group of strong and super motivated athletes. The past two weeks were super demanding, both physically and mentally. From 7:30 am - 4 pm we trained and practiced new techniques. Whether in the ocean, running around Quepos with a raft on our shoulders or learning a new procedure, this group didn't quit. On our final day we battled big waves and strong currents at Playa Hermosa. Everyone accepted the challenge with all that they had. It was an honor to share in this experience. We became stronger and better prepared to help ensure the safety of all on our beautiful beaches of Costa Ballena."
The numbers speak for themselves as to just how important these new lifeguards will be. In this year alone, between the 3 beaches we protect, Playa Dominical, Playa Hermosa and Playa Ventanas, our team has rescued 27 people. Welcome to the family!
