Costa Rica „Champion of the World“
AUTOR: DAGMAR REINHARD
For the first time, the UN awards this recognition to a country, acknowledging the efforts made by the Ticos to protect nature and fight against climate change. Since its launch in 2005, the recognition that distinguishes “those who take bold measures in favor of our planet” has been awarded to 88 laureates: 21 world leaders, 56 individuals, and 11 groups or organizations.
„Champions of the Earth “includes four categories: political leadership (distinction received by Costa Rica), inspiration and action, entrepreneurial vision and science and innovation. Costa Rica produces 98% of its energy from renewable sources, and this made it a world leader in sustainability and creditor of an award that, for sure, compromises.
Another area where Costa Rica is standing out as a pioneer is in the decarbonisation process. Globally the CO2 emissions are reaching record levels, and during the recent Climate Action Summit in New York, alternatives were considered to reduce emissions by 45% over the next decade and achieve carbon-neutrality by 2050.
In Costa Rica electric cars are available with prices under $ 25,000. Maybe you prefer an electric Porsche Taycan, a beast with up to 750 HP of power, and 1,050 Nm of torque that accelerates in 2.8 seconds from 0-100 km/h.
Costa Rica moves towards clean and resilient economies. The government opts for the electrification of public transport. The state company ICE has started with the installation of Recharge Stations for Electric Cars.
This public recharge network already has several semi-fast chargers: at the Liberia Mall, Garabito, Puntarenas, Quepos, Guápiles, Limón, ICE Sabana Norte Central Building, Plaza Real Alajuela, Plaza Jaco Walk and in Limonal de Abangare. In the southern zone, there is a station in Pérez Zeledón and another in Puerto Jiménez. At the institutional level, there are 100 chargers located in ICE facilities throughout the country.
