Beach Safety Tip: SWIM SOBER! Alcohol affects your ability to assess or react quickly to dangerous situations. The ocean can be dangerous even when you’re sober - please don’t put yourself and others at risk by drinking alcohol there.
On July 1, 2018, over 300 people gathered once again at Roca Verde to celebrate the achievements of the local lifeguard program, and to raise money to continue operations. Dozens of individuals and businesses donated their time, sweat, products, services, food, booze and money - resulting in a whopping $13,000+ final donation tally! This is roughly $5,000 more than we procured in 2017, so it’s safe to say that we are quite proud of our Costa Ballena community.
A huge ‘THANK YOU’ and ‘GREAT JOB’ to all the committee members and volunteers who helped organize, sell tickets and drinks, serve food and wrangle the silent auction prizes. Your hard work and effort saves lives! $13,000 is roughly half of the annual budget for the Costa Ballena Lifeguard program. The vast majority of this money is used to pay the salaries of the 8 certified lifeguards on three beaches - Playas Dominical, Hermosa and Ventanas. The remainder is used for ongoing training and certification, rescue supplies and maintenance of the towers.
Additional parties and events will be planned for the coming months with live music, drink specials and 50/50 cash raffles.
