A school garden generates health, economy and a healthy environment

The school of Las Tumbas de Pérez Zeledón has a school garden where kids learn to grow organically. Every Thursday from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, the teacher of the school, Don Minor Arias, and the instructor of organic agriculture of Vida Auténtica, Sergio Montaña, guide the children in the different tasks that an organic garden needs. In this way, school children learn about composting, improving soil fertility, caring for plants and much more. Educational activities are also carried out on the added value that can be given to the products. For example, last year the schoolchildren learned how to make pesto using basil from the garden. All this, with a good dose of art and fun.

A very important aspect that is taught by Sergio to the children is the positive effect that organic foods have on our health and the harmful effects of agrochemicals. The goal is to expand the garden, in 2019, in order to supply more products to the school canteen. The aim is to contribute to good nutrition for school children while allowing them to learn about organic agriculture.

People who have the desire to support this initiative can do so voluntarily. They can help for example, in building an irrigation system or preparing terraces, or in tasks that require adult supervision. They can also donate materials that children need during their classes, for example, organic seeds or paint to make signs.

Another goal of the project is to invite adults to participate in organic farming classes, thus contributing to health, economy, and a healthy environment in the homes of the community. At this moment, Vida Auténtica is accepting applications to participate in adult classes. If you wish to be part of the 2019 generation, write us!
