Shine in Costa Rica And Costa Rica Will Shine on You!

~ by Perry Gladstone

I love to tell stories and post pictures of the beauty of Costa Rica.

It makes me feel good to share my slice of paradise. Almost everyone extols the virtues. “Live In Paradise” say the ads, posters and brochures. What our glowing reports neglect to share, are the very real problems that come with a quickly developing tourist economy. 25% of crime in the Osa takes place in our region.

Beach and home robberies are commonplace. We're short on jobs and skill development. A serious lack of resources puts youth at risk. Police are commonly unsupported and underfunded. It tends to take the shine off things.

It's easy to point to the government and complain about taxes but it is a developing country.

To see improvements, get involved. We are an essential part of the solution. The actions we take, dollars we spend, programs we support and the way we invest affects change.

Shine in Costa Rica And Costa Rica Will Shine on You! - Paradise, beauty

If you see a crime of any kind call 911.

This results in a quicker response by police and insures the call is registered in the national database, statistics needed to get more policing and stronger prosecution laws.

Make a difference by educating friends and visitors. Talk to the police. Say hello. Learn their names. Thank them before opening a dialog with your concerns. Young people need mentors with life skills and experiences. What can you share with them? Various locations can host programs if you want to volunteer.

Buy local. The fresh produce at the Ferias support local families.

Whether you are a local, moved here or are vacationing, you are part of what makes this place amazing. Shine on Costa Rica and Costa Rica will shine on you.
