To find a GastroPub in the magnificent Chirripo’s mountain skirts was quite a surprise. Meeting David, the owner of the successful establishment along with his large family, was another.
“GastroPub” is an innovative business concept where haute cuisine tapas are served at affordable prices. On this occasion we accompanied the G-String Cowboys, a music group that plays Rock, Blues, Country and Swing, to their first concert in Canaan de Rivas. The Innombrables, Jacob Ortega and the Guadalupe Urbina bands previously played at the same place, and they even had a comedy show.
The Cowboys played for 90 minutes without pause while their audience was swaying and dancing to the tune of the contagious songs.
The place was full to the last table, delicious dishes passed from the kitchen, where sous-chef Anthony was busy in action for the diners. The neighbors of the adjacent villages were dressed in jackets since it was a little chilly. Some fans of the group had followed them from the Costa Ballena with a desire to experience the pleasant mountain environment.
David and two of his sisters work hard at the pub together and also at La Estrella Bakery in the same building. They create 10 types of bread, made by hand, and based on a sourdough that is used for fermentation. That means that they are not producing it with commercial yeast.
Already, at 8 o’clock in the morning the small business opens to receive hikers on their way to the fabulous Mount Chirripo.
In Canaan and the surrounding area there is much more to experience and visit such as the now famous artisan cheese factory, Xocolata Samaritan, the Jevi hot springs and paragliding.
