25 percent of Costa Rica’s land area has been set aside for national parks and protected areas.

The government´s goal is to become the first carbon-neutral country by 2021. The Marine Ballena National Park in Costa Ballena of Osa was the first protected area of its kind. Regular beach cleanups, turtle reserves, bird counting, blue flags for beaches, rivers and even schools and other initiatives are carried forward by local organizations, protecting the rich variety of environment & wildlife.
