I have always liked football (soccer) as a sporting activity and a cultural option that improves people’s health and education. Sports are very motivating for young people, but society has modified its interpretation of the role of sports in our countries’ policies. When I played football at the Pérez Zeledón Sports School, we made a great effort to overcome challenges during the training sessions.
From San Isidro de El General, great athletes have emerged, such as Keylor Navas, goalkeeper of the Spanish team Real Madrid.
It was not easy for Keylor to beat the odds that he faced every day. Today he is admired by everyone, and is loved in Pérez Zeledón because he is so talented and is a blessing we are very proud of. Authorities and civilians must work harder to boost the development of sports and our athletes. Our country has impressive cyclists and runners, but the support they receive is minimum.
Just think about how much joy our National Football Team gave us at the last World Cup, and now Keylor, who turned Pérez Zeledón and Costa Rica into a household name.
Football is an important part of our recreational activities, and its development is as wide as the traditions and ingenuity of its organizers. Sports is a mass phenomenon, which, at the same time, proves to be a fast-growing opportunity for generaleños (people from Pérez Zeledón).
Here we have very capable people in the fields of culture, literature, sports, environment, and politics. Southern Costa Rica invites and offers you its hospitality for you to visit us and enjoy our various cultural and sporting activities. Come and celebrate the anniversary of our cantonato (creation of our county), October 3 to 15, admire Chirripó National Park’s flora and fauna, and the hot springs in Rivas.
