Of héroes and villains!

Author: Arch. José Guillén

The construction of residential areas in Costa Ballena de Osa and in coastal areas overall has led to significant urban development and the growth of various commercial activities and services. This has provided people with more opportunities to achieve their dreams without having to leave their local area.

Thanks to us builders, your restaurants, local eateries, workshops, hardware stores, B&Bs, hotels, clinics, car rental businesses, cleaning services, and even banks have the opportunity to thrive. Therefore, I hope that the appreciation is mutual and that there can be more support for us since we are heroes - not superheroes, just humans who make sacrifices so that everyone can enjoy a successful, prosperous, and peaceful life.

The heroes and villains

The real heroes are the construction workers, engineers, and architects who leave their families and comfortable homes to serve a greater purpose - not just for financial gain, but to make a meaningful contribution, progress in their careers, and build a better future.

We are heroes despite facing challenges in regulations, accessibility, and the availability of skilled labor, not to mention the immense efforts we put into construction work under difficult weather conditions.

Heroes because despite the cost of acquiring goods and services in a tourist area, we manage to get ahead and stay, sometimes longer than planned, and that is our investment, to be here still.

However, we are also villains, a detail here and another there, and everything we build for a long time can fall since it is not allowed to fail or err, much less to flog ourselves for that very thing.

Villains because our budgets are exact, not fantasy, because sometimes we decide to have vacations or not to work on holidays.

Villains because we remain firm in our values, principles, and professional integrity and do not allow money, power, or status to buy us; that is being an elegant villain.

Villains, because we demand quality from everyone and at all costs without expecting anything in return that is not paid or remunerated, have become a lifestyle that few share.

Villains because we are sincere and honest and we tell the truth, even if it is uncomfortable, hurts or we do not take the project.

Heroes and villains are the same character. They have the same faculties and objectives, and they live and die with the same end and the same purpose: the construction to continue, rain or shine!

I sometimes feel proud of being a villain because I have been a hero for more than 25 years in this career in architecture and construction. I have seen more than I should, and I have learned the lesson: more quality in everything and less quantity. At least now I want what I need and not the other way around.

Conclusion: One day, I wake up as a hero, and other days, I go to bed as a villain, but at the end of the day, I feel more than proud of our service here in Uvita and Dominical, of the focus on my subject and “expertise,” of my people, and my objectives.

Building on the coasts, especially in Uvita, is only for heroes and villains. Only in this way do we learn, grow, and do things better. Long-term, a clean career is more important than money, and staying in the market is only for the brave.
