Jan Erick Lackstetter, (his nickname is Lacki), is German and lives with his little family surrounded by a large garden of exotic orchids in Platanillo. In Germany, he received a very complete training as a gardener, and worked for eight years in the Botanic Garden in Cologne.

The orchids bewitched him from the first moment he saw them; one day his employer, in response to his pleas, allowed him to work with in vitro seed reproduction in the Garden’s laboratory.  The orchids also made him dream of living in a tropical country. Today, Lacki loves performing in his nurseries in Platanillo, the complicated and time-consuming process that requires a lot of patience.  He does not use chemical additives, and is mostly committed to the reproduction of species in danger of extinction.

Orchids are distinguished by the complexity of their flowers and their ecological interactions with pollinators and fungi.  They are not parasitic but epiphytic plants, which are plants that live on another one without taking anything from it.  The orchid family includes some 30,000 species plus the varieties produced by growers who practice plant hybridization.  Orchids need eight years to flower for the first time, and then fill the space with its delicate and perfect charm for a long time. Lacki has species from Asia and South America.

His project’s objective is to provide plants that adapt to every environment, are easy to care for, and available at a very affordable price.
